You open web.whatsapp.com, the QR code appears, you grab your phone, open Linked Devices, point your camera… and nothing happens. Or the code disappears before you can scan it. Or it doesn't appear at all.

First, What's Actually Wrong?

QR code problems fall into three groups. Identifying which one you have saves time:

WhatsApp Web QR codes expire after about 30 to 60 seconds. If you stared at the code while finding your phone, opened Linked Devices, and got to scanning, it may already be dead.

Press F5 (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + R (Mac) to refresh, then scan immediately when the new code appears. Have your phone open to the Linked Devices screen before you refresh, so you can scan instantly.

Fix 2: Turn Up Your Screen Brightness

Fix 4: Disable Dark Mode Browser Extensions (The Hidden Trap)

Solves: QR code looks weird, has wrong colors, or your phone refuses to recognize it

This one catches a lot of people, and most troubleshooting guides miss it.

If you use a browser extension that forces dark mode on every site — Dark Reader is the most common, but there are others — it can invert the QR code's colors, turning the standard black-on-white pattern into something your phone's camera doesn't recognize as a valid QR code.

The fix:

Open WhatsApp Web in an Incognito / Private window (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome, Cmd + Shift + N on Mac), which disables most extensions by default

This is a diagnostic step. If WhatsApp Web works fine in a different browser or Incognito mode, the problem is something specific to your usual browser — an extension, a cached file, or a stuck cookie. Move on to the next fix to clean that up.

Fix 6: Clear Cookies for web.whatsapp.com

Solves: Stale sessions, QR refresh loops, persistent loading errors

Corrupted browser data is responsible for a meaningful share of WhatsApp Web problems. Clearing it forces a clean start.

In Chrome:
