WhatsApp Web Not Working? 10 Fixes That Actually Work in 2026
WhatsApp Web is one of those tools that works perfectly 95% of the time and breaks in mysterious ways the other 5%. The QR code won't scan. The page loads blank. Chats sync on your phone but not in the browser. You log in, refresh, and you're back at the QR screen again.
If any of that sounds familiar, this guide is for you. Below are 10 fixes ordered roughly from quickest to most involved. Start at the top and work down — most issues are resolved by one of the first three.
Before You Start: Identify Your Problem
WhatsApp Web failures usually fall into one of four categories. Knowing which one you have saves time.
- Won't load — page is blank, stuck loading, or won't display the QR code at all
- Won't scan — QR code shows but your phone can't read it or the link fails
- Won't stay logged in — you're being kicked back to the QR screen repeatedly
- Won't sync — you're logged in but messages aren't appearing or sending
Make a quick mental note of which one you're dealing with. Some fixes below are universal, others are category-specific — we'll flag which is which.
Fix 1: Refresh the Page (Yes, Really)
Solves: QR code expired, temporary connection hiccup, browser glitch
This sounds insultingly basic, but it works more often than anything else on this list. WhatsApp Web QR codes expire after about 60 seconds. If you stared at the QR for too long while finding your phone, it's already dead.
Hit F5 (or Cmd + R on Mac) and try again with the new QR code. If you've been refreshing already and nothing changes, move on.
Fix 2: Check That Your Phone Has Internet
Solves: Sync issues, persistent logout loops
WhatsApp Web mirrors your phone in real time. If your phone is offline, WhatsApp Web has nothing to mirror.
Open WhatsApp on your phone and send yourself a test message in any chat (the "Note to Self" chat works well). If it sends instantly, your phone is online. If it shows a clock icon stuck for more than a few seconds, your phone is the problem — not your computer.
As of 2026, WhatsApp's multi-device feature lets WhatsApp Web work for up to 14 days without your phone being online, but the initial pairing and many sync operations still require your phone to be reachable.
Fix 3: Use the Correct URL (And Watch for Phishing)
Solves: "Won't load" issues caused by being on the wrong site
The real WhatsApp Web URL is exactly this:
https://web.whatsapp.com
Nothing else. If you Googled "WhatsApp Web" and clicked a result, there's a small but real chance you landed on a phishing site that imitates the real one. Phishing sites often ask for your phone number, password, or other information — the real WhatsApp Web only ever shows a QR code.
Type the URL directly into your browser's address bar to be safe.
Fix 4: Try a Different Browser
Solves: Browser-specific bugs, extension conflicts, cookie corruption
If WhatsApp Web won't load in Chrome, try Firefox. If it won't work in Firefox, try Edge. If you're on a Mac, Safari is a good fallback.
This isn't a permanent fix — it's a diagnostic. If WhatsApp Web works in a different browser, the problem is something specific to your usual browser: an extension, a corrupted cookie, an outdated version, or a setting that's blocking the site. Knowing that narrows down your next move significantly.
Fix 5: Clear Cookies for web.whatsapp.com
Solves: Logout loops, blank screens, session errors
Corrupted cookies are responsible for a surprisingly large share of WhatsApp Web problems. Clearing them forces a fresh session.
In Chrome:
- Click the three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data → See all site data and permissions
- Search for
whatsapp - Click the trash icon next to
web.whatsapp.com - Reload the page
In Firefox:
- Click the three-line menu → Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data
- Search for
whatsapp - Remove the entry and reload
In Safari:
- Safari menu → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Search for
whatsappand remove
After clearing, re-scan the QR code. This fixes the persistent logout loop in about half the cases we've seen.
Fix 6: Disable Browser Extensions Temporarily
Solves: Blank screens, missing features, things "looking weird"
Browser extensions sometimes interfere with WhatsApp Web in unexpected ways. The usual suspects:
- Aggressive ad blockers — sometimes block scripts WhatsApp Web needs
- Privacy extensions — can block tracking pixels that WhatsApp legitimately uses for session management
- VPN extensions — can route your traffic in ways WhatsApp's servers find suspicious
- Old or poorly-maintained WhatsApp extensions — particularly anything that hasn't been updated in over a year
Open WhatsApp Web in an Incognito / Private window (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome, Cmd + Shift + N on Mac). Incognito disables most extensions by default. If WhatsApp Web works there, the problem is an extension in your regular browsing profile — disable them one by one to find the culprit.
⚠️ Important note: if you're using a customization extension like WhatsApp Web Customizer, it should not break WhatsApp Web. It runs as a CSS/UI layer on top of the existing site and doesn't interfere with WhatsApp's core functionality. If a customization extension is causing your problem, that's a bug worth reporting to the developer — most maintained extensions fix these within a day or two.
Fix 7: Check Your Linked Devices Limit
Solves: "Can't link new device" errors, unexpected logouts
WhatsApp allows a maximum of 4 linked devices at a time, plus your phone. If you've hit the limit, new logins will silently fail or kick out an existing session.
To check and clean up:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone
- Tap Linked Devices (three-dot menu on Android, Settings tab on iPhone)
- You'll see a list of every device currently logged in — laptops, browsers, tablets, the desktop app
Tap any device you don't recognize or no longer use and select Log Out. Then try linking your computer again.
This is also where you should look if you ever suspect someone else has linked their device to your account — log out any session you don't recognize immediately.
Fix 8: Disable Your VPN
Solves: Connection failures, QR code won't load, persistent disconnects
WhatsApp's servers are generally tolerant of VPNs, but certain VPN servers — especially free ones or those that route through high-abuse IP ranges — get flagged as suspicious. The result is either a complete connection failure or unstable sessions that drop every few minutes.
Turn off your VPN, reload WhatsApp Web, and see if the problem disappears. If it does, the fix is either to switch VPN servers (try a different country) or to whitelist web.whatsapp.com in your VPN's split-tunneling settings if your VPN supports them.
Fix 9: Update Your Browser, Phone, and WhatsApp
Solves: Compatibility issues, missing features, weird visual bugs
WhatsApp Web is updated frequently. If you're running an old browser version, an old phone OS, or an old WhatsApp build, you'll occasionally hit compatibility problems that look like bugs but are really version mismatches.
Make sure all three are current:
- Browser — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari all auto-update by default, but check by going to your browser's "About" page
- Phone OS — open Settings → System → Software Update (Android) or Settings → General → Software Update (iPhone)
- WhatsApp on your phone — open the Play Store or App Store and check for an update
This fix is slower but resolves a long tail of obscure issues that nothing else touches.
Fix 10: Unlink and Relink From Scratch
Solves: Almost everything that the previous 9 fixes didn't
This is the nuclear option, but it works.
- On your phone, open Linked Devices and Log Out of every active session
- On your computer, close WhatsApp Web entirely
- Clear cookies for
web.whatsapp.com(see Fix 5) - Restart both your phone and your computer
- Open
web.whatsapp.comfresh and scan the QR code
This forces a completely new device pairing from scratch. If a persistent bug has been living in your session for weeks, this clears it out.
Specific Problem: WhatsApp Web Loads Blank
If your specific issue is that WhatsApp Web loads to a completely blank or white screen — no chat list, no QR code, just nothing — we've written a separate, more focused guide for this one specifically. The fix is usually one of three things, and we walk through each.
👉 Read the blank screen fix guide
Specific Problem: QR Code Won't Scan
If your QR code shows up fine but your phone won't read it, the issue is almost always one of these:
- Camera lens is dirty — wipe it with a microfiber cloth
- Screen brightness is too low — turn your computer's brightness up so your phone's camera can focus
- You're holding the phone too close or too far — try 15–30 cm away
- The QR code expired — refresh the WhatsApp Web page for a new one
- Your phone's camera app has issues — try opening the regular camera app first to confirm it works, then go back to WhatsApp
When None of This Works
If you've worked through all 10 fixes and WhatsApp Web still doesn't work, the issue is likely on WhatsApp's side, not yours. Check:
- Downdetector — community-reported outages, updates in real time
- WhatsApp's official status page for known incidents
- Twitter / X — search
WhatsApp downto see if others are reporting the same issue
If there's an active outage, the only fix is to wait. WhatsApp's reliability is generally excellent, but outages do happen a few times a year and usually resolve within an hour or two.
Once It's Working Again: Make It Worth Using
Once WhatsApp Web is back online, you might notice something: the interface itself hasn't changed in years. Same flat green color scheme, same default font, same fixed layout. You can't change any of it from inside WhatsApp.
If you've ever wished WhatsApp Web looked better — true dark mode, a custom font, a privacy blur for working in public, or just a background that isn't the same one everyone else has — WhatsApp Web Customizer is the extension MakeUseOf, TechPP, and other tech publications have featured throughout 2025–2026 for exactly this.
It's free, open source, and takes about 30 seconds to install. Worth a look once you've got WhatsApp Web running smoothly again.
The Bottom Line
WhatsApp Web breaks for predictable reasons: expired QR codes, corrupted cookies, browser extensions, hit device limits, or stale sessions that need a hard reset. The 10 fixes above resolve roughly 99% of issues we've seen.
