Fixing the Awkward Gaps in WhatsApp Web Chat List: How User Feedback Improved Our Extension

April 14, 2026 — One of the most valuable parts of developing this WhatsApp Web extension is hearing directly from you about the little things that frustrate your daily experience.

Recently, several users described a similar issue: an awkward gap or excessive spacing between chats in the sidebar. Some mentioned chats feeling “stuck together” or separated by too much empty space, making the list harder to scan and navigate.

Understanding the Real Problem

When the first reports came in, I initially struggled to picture exactly what was wrong. At first glance, it seemed like a minor visual or “beauty” issue rather than a functional one. I even discussed it with ChatGPT to clarify, but still couldn’t fully grasp the impact.

Then I did a side-by-side comparison: our customized chat list versus WhatsApp Web’s default styling.

That’s when it clicked.

The problem wasn’t just the spacing itself. The real issue was that chat previews and message snippets became much harder to read after the style changes. The increased gaps reduced scannability and made it tougher to quickly identify which conversation was which.

Once I saw it clearly, the fix became obvious.

How We Handle User Reports

We take every piece of feedback seriously, but we’re especially careful with changes. If only one person reports an issue, I usually test it briefly and leave it as-is if I can’t reproduce the problem myself.

However, when multiple users mention the same pain point, it moves to the top of our priority list. That’s exactly what happened here.

The spacing adjustment has now been updated. The chat list feels more balanced, previews are clearer, and the overall sidebar is easier to use — without losing the clean, customized look.
